Buying Real Wood

I am not an avid shopper of your company but do enjoy great furniture. How does a novice tell the difference between real wood and the particle board junk, of which I do have experience with ie . . . Rooms To Go. I so want to stay away from that type of cheap furniture, without spending a fortune.
