"Distinguished Member Award" from UFA

Charles Blankenship (on the right) during preparation for a grand opening at one of our Wood You Furniture stores.

Wood You Furniture has been serving our customers for over thirty years with quality real wood furniture. When Wood You Furniture was first started in Jacksonville, FL in 1977 no one could have known just what Wood You was to become. Charles Blankenship came on board with his first personal store in 1979 and after becoming a partner, with Alton Johnston, in Wood You Distributors Inc. he played a significant part in the growth of this company from that time on. His forward thinking and determination helped propel this company into a tremendous growth spurt from the late 1980's into the 21st century.

Mr. Blankenship was one of the charter members for the foundation of the Unfinished Furniture Association (UFA), also holding numerous positions over the last two decades on the board of trustees and serving on multiple steering committees, over the years, for the national association (UFA).

Later he was honored to lead Wood You Distributors into becoming the first ever international unfinished furniture chain; opening in the Bahamas and eventually into Trinidad, where they stand to this day.

During a National Show for the Unfinished Furniture Association Mr. Blankenship was awarded the "Distinguished Member Award" recognizing and rewarding his decades of service and positive contributions to the growth of this wonderful industry.

Congratulations, Mr. Blankenship. Your positive mark has been left on this industry as a whole and on Wood You Distributors Inc. in particular. As a company we would like to recognize Charles Blankenship. Thanks Mr. B. you should be proud of your legacy. You have been a wise counsel in this industry and built your legacy throughout this country, both within Wood You Furniture and beyond!

Love this blog, although not sure why all the heated conversation. It seems great to me that anyone in the company would get honored. It says a lot about the company and the people behind it. Maybe there is a team building lesson needed for Wood You.

As a customer, I love the furniture and all the information this blog provides. Keep providing great products and prices. . . . (comments edited)

Just wanted to give my congrats to Mr. B. I read the blog often but rarely comment. When I saw this blog post I had to put my two cents in.

I spent some five years plus in the Wood You system first as a manager in a few different Jacksonville stores and then as a store owner in Bradenton, FL

The counsel I received from Mr. Blankenship was always a positive force in my young business owner's life. I have since moved on but the lessons that I have learned while in the Wood You System have served me well in my other endeavors.

What a quality company offering great values throughout. I still buy my furniture from you guys any time I need something. Thank you for the opportunities offered and the lessons taught.

Congrats Mr. B. an award well deserved, in honor of you I say "GO GATORS"!

My man, great to hear from you! Thanks for the kind words I know Mr. B. will appreciate them. Now quit just reading the blog and start posting more often. You were trained well so I know you still have a lot of knowledge in that brain of yours :)

What You See Is Not Always What You Get

Inferior Particleboard

800px-particleboard

VS

commercial-plywood

Real Wood = Real Value

Both pictures above use a veneer top. Veneer's are great to use on shelves and sides to help keep costs down while offering superior strength. The problem with veneer arises with what products manufacturers use underneath it . . . that's where the term "veneer" has received sauch a bad rap and where many nationally recognizeable furniture manufacturers and retailers hide their lack of quality. However, if you know what and where to look it is rather easy to spot their tactics.

Throughout this blog post I will be offering simple tips and insight into how to tell if you nare truly getting what you think you are paying for . . . an all wood piece of furniture. Have you ever thought or heard a friend say "but my furniture is so heavy?" Weight really carries no bearing on the quality nor does it indicate real wood. In fact, inferior particleboard and MDF is actually heavier than the typical all wood furniture out in our Wood You stores.

Furniture shopping should be such an enjoyable experience. It is a time when you are redesigning a room, starting your vision from scratch or searching for just the right piece to complete your room in your most personal space in your life . . . your home!

So why does it have to become so stressful? From my perspective it is due to the confusion potential customers get from the unlimited options in building materials, quality and the higher price points that seem to indicate it has to be a quality product. Retailers and salespeople claiming their products are "Medium Cherry" or "Light Oak" and all the while they are describing the name of their color, not the actual type of wood you are purchasing. Why name their colors those confusing names? Only one reason comes to mind for me . . . to further confuse the customer into thinking they are buying actual Cherry or Oak furniture. When in fact they are overpaying for inferior products with a veneer that contains nothing more than particleboard.

There is a major misconception that all furniture is basically the same in all furniture retailers thus the final decision boild down to one of a pure price point. This exact thought process has led to so many dissatisfied customers and true "buyer's remorse" to the point that no wonder furniture shopping can be a dreaded event almost rivaling the car buying experience.

So the question we all want answered is how to find true quality and value in our furniture buying decision? I certainly have my own thoughts; which I will share throughout this post but first I would like to open this question up to our dealers, employees and and our guests. How can a customer make sure they are getting real wood instead of the "Light Oak" or "Medium Cherry" that misleads customers to believe they are paying for Oak or Cherry; when in fact they have just wasted their hard earned money on inferior particleboard products that will last until the first move or first spill and then it begins to fall apart. That is not true value!

So whether you have a disaster story or a bit of insight to share with others about how to spot inferior products that are way over priced . . . please take the time to share.

Take the time and refer to the picture on this post. Below are just a few simple pointers to remember when shopping for quality furniture.

1) Price does not dictate quality. Just because you are paying more or from a name brand does not make it real wood.

2) Take a look at the backs of items, take drawers out and look inside the "guts" of the piece. Pay close attention to the braces inside; often those will not be as concealed as the exterior of a piece. You may even need to look underneath tables.

3) Ask the salesperson assisting you specifically . . . however, be careful many of them do not even know themselves or may be misleading.

4) Be careful often particleboard can be heavier than real wood products.

5) Pay close attention to floor models throughout the stores you visit. Often there will be items that have small damages displaying the particleboard. If it is in one item odds are there is more in the store!

6) Be careful of finished items with words like - "Light Oak", "Medium Cherry" or any combination with a wood species in it. This is describing the color but far to often people think that is the type of wood they are buying.

7) Ask your salesperson if they have a damaged room or area for discounted items. You may not want to buy them but there you can see whats under the surface of the items due to the damage!

8) The easiest way is to buy from a real wood certified dealer. If in one of our towns you can rest at ease and if not visit the Unfinished Furniture Association website - http://www.unfinishedfurniture.org for certified dealers in your local area.

Shopping for furniture should be fun but don't forget it is your hard earned money. A little bit of leg work can make sure your family is getting the greatest value possible!

Pat
What methods and type of paint do you recommend for your furniture?

-----------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------

Response to Pat:

Pat,
Many of our stores are privately owned so I can not speak for them all. However, most of the Wood You stores carry a milk paint (waterbased) product. These milk paints are easy to apply and dry very quickly making them perfect for our furniture and customers who are always looking to finish their projects as efficiently as possible. Typically with the milk paints you would want to then apply a polyacrylic (waterbase) topcoat. The trendy colors today are black and white although there are many different earth tone and bright colors to choose from.

As for my personal preference I love distressing furniture . . . of course with three kids that distressing can be done naturally as well :) Stop by your local Wood You Furniture store and allow them to show you the wide variety of colors and painting techniques available.

If you ask, I am confident, they will let you play with the product in the store prior to purchasing so you can get a feel for the products and just how easy they are to apply and achieve that professionally finished look. Have a great week and please come back and let me know how it worked out for you!

I purchased this a few weeks ago from the Clearwater, FL store. The salesmen were wonderful and very helpful. The price was very reasonable too. I was told I would be able to apply the finish on my own because of how easy it was to do. Well, IT WAS! I am still waiting for 5 more chairs (already finished 3 of them) to come in. But, I will say and my family can agree that it looks very professional! There were no flaws in doing this process and so easy! I will continue to make all my purchases from this location! Thank you so much Ed, for making my dining room beautiful!

I bought a dresser, hi-boy, and foot chest 8 years ago. I have never been more impressed with any furniture in my life (and I have owned and furnished 6 homes in my life time). The quality and workmanship just keeps going on and on. I have never had any problems with any hardware, fitting, etc. The set has been moved 4 times by moving companies and you know how rough they can be. The stain is still beautiful after all these years. Thank you so much for such fine, quality product at such a reasonable price.

I purschased my bedroom set and dining set around nine (9)years ago, and they still look like new, after few moves, I got my furniture in Miami lakes, in a store that is no longer there, by that time I only have one kid, Anthony, a very active boy, my second boy Lucas is almost the same age the first one had when I purschased the furniture, 3 years, and Lucas is as active if not more that the first one, that is why we are planning, my wife and I a visit to the store in Davie Fl to get our self a new TV stand, a desk or computer station, two night stands and a couple of book cases, I know there is no other store that offers the quality you guys have in your pieces, and is because of simple fact that all is made with real wood, even the stain is better in my opinion than the one you can buy at Home depot, i still have some from the first time.
Everything today is made of particleboard cover with paper, you guys are the best.

why is there not prices on the website? is it because the prices are high and it is easier to rope in customers in store? as a mom of 3 under the age of 5 1/2 i like to pin down my stores before getting the whole family out. this site makes it difficult for me to save time.

-------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------

Response to mom of 3:

mom of 3,

I do understand how nice it would be to have prices on this website, However as explained a couple of times in earlier posts pricing is not something we are able to do with our store locations. We have stores in the Bahamas and Trinidad and the way their countries collect the taxes is different than the USA. This makes their set pricing different than what ours would be. There are other reasons but this alone prevents pricing on our site.

However, a simple phone call to your local store and you can receive all the service and local pricing you desire. Either that or you can fil out our price request form and we will make sure it gets in the hands of those closest to your designated zip code to assist you. Hope this helps you!

I have been with this company for most of my adult life and have never seen, trained my employees nor set out to "rope" a customer in. We certainly are not perfect and you may have unique experiences in different locations but the heart of this company is to serve and to offer great quality real wood furniture at great pricing! However, with the typical furniture stores in mind I certainly understand how you might feel that all furniture companies are the same . . . We work hard to be a unique buying experience. I look forward to hearing back from you once you ger involved in our company and see why we have so many followers . . . thank you much for your time and your comments, take care of them young'ins :)

Hi there. I see according to the poll numbers that most people are looking for kids rooms when viewing our website. Well, why don't you stop on in our store here in Altamonte Springs, FL. I've have two kids myself, and love to help "design" kid's rooms, they're so much fun. Both my kids have Wood You furniture, in a variety, of colors in their rooms. Heck, bring your child and I'll have my 7 yr old show them how to stain/paint for themselves.
See you soon.

This whole comment was taken from Wikipedia's website. Pay close attention to the last sentence and just know many of your well known manufacturers and furniture retailers are developing ways to simulate quality real wood without truly offering it to you:

"Solid wood is more durable than particleboard. Damage to solid wood can be repaired by removing and replacing damaged material then refinishing using known wood treatments that can be matched. Since particleboard is typically faced with by a non-wood veneer, it may be impossible to match the original finish. In addition, damage to particleboard is typified by structural failure and exposure of sizable jagged faults. Damage to particleboard is therefore normally very difficult to repair, usually requiring replacement of the damaged particleboard elements.

The reduced durability of particle board furniture is a consequence of reduced strength in extension. This drawback contributes to damage when furniture is moved; if possible, the furniture should be disassembled to eliminate the possibility of damage in transit.

Most people consider solid wood furniture to be more attractive than particleboard. Recognizing this, furniture makers often cover particle board with real or imitation veneers, in an effort to simulate the look of solid wood."

Not sure if this is appropriate for this blog entry, but here is a quote from Ellen R Shell author of "Cheap: the High Cost of Discount Culture".
"when you see something and you're motivated by price — and we all are — you walk away. Take a walk around the store and think about it. Freud said there are two parts of our thinking system. The primary process is the impulsive, playful, I've-gotta-have-it-now side. The second is the more thoughtful, contemplative side. Get that secondary process going. Think about why you want this object — this particular MP3 player, this particular screwdriver. Is this really going to do the job for you?"

When buying furniture, think about what you're spending. Do you want to buy something that will be damaged by rearranging a room or going through a move? or do you want furniture that can be in your family for generations? I can't tell you how much furniture I've left behind during my 10 moves in the last 15 years. We now own mostly real wood furniture from Wood You or made before 1970 & handed down from older family members. I'll never buy anything not made of real wood again, it's not worth the price long term.

Here at the store we like both the Gel and the Liquid stains. They both have interesting application features.

Mr Kahr,

Thank you for taking the time to contact us and point out some of our issues on this site. We have recently uploaded many new items and they need to have descriptions and measurements added to them. Unfortunately, I am it so the going can be a bit slower than you or I would like but we will continue working on it.

As for being able to look into the armoires and other items with doors. That will not be something we will be doing on this site. Our original site had that but the time and monies it takes to keep up with that was just too much for us. I apologize for any inconvience this may cause. The idea is for you to be able to get a good general idea of what we carry and then you visit our stores for a bit of a deeper investigation of that piece.

Thank you for pointing out the error message you recieved I will look into it and see what we can do about it. One thing I have learned with this and all sites is that you never are done tweaking them :)

Have a wonderful week!

I see that the majority of people that have not purchased from Wood You state the reason being "afraid to finish".
Wood You offers a No Fault Finish Guarantee on our finishing products. If you buy our furniture and our finishing kit and some how "mess" up your finishing we will make it right with you.

I know that in my store I've had some customers finish here. If you check out our fan page on facebook (I love wood you furniture) you can see them. If you come into our Altamonte Springs store, we'll show you pictures of my 6 year old finishing and show you some pieces he's completed.
I say all this because finishing is not complicated. It is time consuming, but not difficult. We've shown cubscouts, girlscouts, a church knitting club how to finish with AWESOME results. ANY OF OUR STORES WOULD LOVE TO SHOW YOU AS WELL!!

Rob

Response to Rob:

Rob,
Well said sir! I do think the poll results are interesting. People still remember the old style of finishing products and also add the "refininshing" of a used item with the finishing of a ready to finish item with todays products. There is a bit of time involved but I have twenty years that shows a customer does not mind the little effort needed if they can be guaranteed the end result. Not to mention the bragging rights when all your friends and family stop by your house; and they realize it was you who finished that irem or room. Thanks for your input!

Dear Mr.Blankenship,
I wanted to let you know how help I have received from you and your stores. A posted a question to you on a piece that I could not get from my local store, and you answered my e-mail. I called the Altamonte Springs store and spoke to Rob Lebo and he called many stores in Fl. and called me back to tell me where the piece was and when he could get it to me, it was not in any of the Orlando stores so he gave me the Clearwater store number and I called Patrick Hemming, he didn't have one in stock but a truck would be coming down with one on it in a few weeks. Rob called me again on Tuesday to say the truck was early and Clearwater had on. I called Patrick and he pulled it aside for us. We are so very delighted to have this last piece for our quest/sewing room. All your staff were so very helpful in locating and calling us back. The piece was ready and waiting for us this last Saturday in Clearwater,as promised. All we can say is WOW...Thank you for having all the right people working for you. Wood You is a delightful place to shop and I will bring many more customers to you.Thank you to Rob and Patrick for being true to their word and to you Mr.Blankenship for operating a wonderful business and asking your employees to always do the right thing. " Take care of your customers and they will take care of you"
Sincerely Stephanie G.

Response to Stephanie:

Ms Stephanie,
I am truly humbled by all the kind words you gave my staff and I. Regardless of the naysayers in the retail world my staff is focused on the end result . . . truly satisfied customers! I can't say I have batted 1,000 but we can say we swing for the fence everytime and it looks like in your case we hit a home run.

You patronage is never taken lightly and we promise to continue to earn your business each and every time you come in. Thanks again for taking the time to share your wonderful experience with myself, my staff and all our blog readers . . . you made my staff's day. If this is not a good reason to work so hard as we do I do not know what is, you are certain to energize our staff and remind them why we do what we do . . . thank you!

I have been shopping with Wood You since my Dad introduced me to your company while still in college some 12 years ago.

I stop by your blog from time to time and when I saw your question I immediately knew what I'd like to hear about. I would like to know a little about the manufacturers you buy from. I often wondered where some of my furniture's wood and craftmanship came from. Just an idea!

Response to Dawn:

Dawn,
Thank you and your family for your loyalty to us, that is what we work so hard to gain. I think that is a great idea! Are you aware of our manufacturers or were you just looking for general info? Either way that would be neat to spotlight a manufacturer from time to time and let our customers get to know where we get our products from and the care in which they take to offer the highest quality all wood products at great values!

I am not an avid shopper of your company but do enjoy great furniture. How does a novice tell the difference between real wood and the particle board junk, of which I do have experience with ie . . . Rooms To Go. I so want to stay away from that type of cheap furniture, without spending a fortune. To me this would be an interesting topic!

If you are someone who has been into a Wood You location, but chose to make your purchase with another store, what was your deciding factor? Was it price? Was it unavailability of what you wanted? Was it a fear of staining? What was it?
These needs you had, we will work towards providing for you so that you can put more real wood in your home and less particleboard.
Thanks,
Travis Johnston

Travis,

Well said! Lets see when this blog post gets created what the responses will be. Another way to approach this is also through one of our polls . . . I have left the original one up for quite sometime but your idea would make a great poll!

I would like to see a post on what styles and trends that the consumer wants in their home. If I knew what the actual consumer likes in terms of style, I can order and inventory according to these trends. This in turn would satisfy the needs of the consumer now. I know the styles and trends that manufacturers are putting forward, just need to know if these trends match what the consumer would want in their home.

Thanks,

Mr. Smith,
Welcome to the blog! For those of you in and around the Opelika area this Wood You store is a must see! What a neat experience it is just to visit Daniel's location . . . but be careful it can become addictive :)

I agree, what a great blog post that would be . . . too many times the manufacturers of furniture dictate the style. Let's put it to the people here to let us know what styles and designs they want. Maybe even what area of their house they are having the most difficulty finding the style and function that best suites them personally.

Great idea Daniel! You will see this one soon and be sure when you do that you get involved in the discussion with our customers that come on here.

Sincerely,

Although I am familiar with Wood You I would enjoy getting to know those in each store. A bit of history on each location would be interesting for me personally.

I would love to see a post that gives a few pointers on making sure you are buying real wood.

I learned from experience that just because something has real wood on it does not mean it is al real wood regardless of what the salesperson says!

I buy when I have an absolute need. Of course then I need the "boss" (my bride) to concur on the decision. LOL. So that could delay the timing of my purchase.

OK I'll go first . . . I want to do a blog post on the reasons you the consumer put off your purchases.

I think this is a fascinating topic. Why customers buy when they buy. What puts you the customer over the top when it comes to making a decision . . . the more we know the better we csn cater to your specific needs!

OK there is one of mine, whats yours?

We are extremely happy about the purchases we made today. We were helped by Gordon, who was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. We will definitely be going back. Great customer service and great furniture.

Thanks, Gordon!

Thanks so much for the kind words. I happen to know the owner of these stores and although we can not please everyone I know how serious he takes his stores and the customers that shop in them. So thanks for taking the time to express the great experience you had in the store . . . Don't be a stranger here on the blog.

I have purchased Wood-U furniture before but I have become an internet shopper. I will not go out to buy without price shopping first. Your new web site shows no prices (I'm not sure the 'old' one did either. I assume the price of unfinished items are the same in each store. If they are not, that would be nice to know as well. A price list would make my trip justified. Thanks.

----------------------------------------
----------------------------------------

Response to Dana:

Dana,
Pricing is not available on the main site for one specific reason. We have stores in the Bahamas and Trinidad and their price and tax structure is very different from the United States of America. So we would not be able to give a set price that would honestly cover all our prices. Also many towns have lisceensed stores in them and their price structure is set by that owner according to shipping costs etc . . . So although we are similar none of us have the exact pricing.

You can send in a price request and we will forward that request to your local store to contact you and give out the pricing. Also you can write down the stock number on the site and simply contact your local Wood You Furniture store for their local price. I hope this helps!

Brett Blankenship

I apologize, I should have stated that the store was in North Miami, Florida.

Response to Mr Gorgonzola:

Mr. Gorgonzola,

wow you are right . . . it has been closed for such a short period of time that I breezed right by that one. I apologize for the inconvience I personally caused you, it definately should have been removed! On a better note we do have other stores in that area that would love a chance to earn your business. Wood You of Davie is the next closet location to you. Jason and his crew would be happy to service you and all your furniture needs. A little bit further away but so worth the trip when it comes to quality all wood furniture at affordable prices!

We hope to see you there!

My Family and I recently foung out about you through a friend. We found the location closest to us on your website. When we went their they were closed and a mattress store was setting up. I guess my point is that if you have a closed location they should not be listed on your site.

Response to Mr. Gorgonzola:

Mr Gorgonzola,

Would you please specify which location you are speaking of on our main site? I went online and looked at all the locations on the site and they are all viable stores. Please share with me if you see something I do not :) Regardless thank you for taking the time to contact us, i can always use an extra set of eyes!

Hi Marshall: Do you remember me from when you were a great teacher at LMS? Anyway I am retired now and enjoying grandkids. We redid our kitchen an purchased a great corner cab from Wood U store. Now I am looking for a shelf but the store, which was in Casselberry FL is gone. Marshall is you r still there please contact me at m******@earthlink.net Thanks, Dorie Dobbins in Orlando, FL

------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------

Response to Ms. Dobbins:

Ms Dobbins Marshal is still in the Wood you Furniture family and I will pass your email on to him without posting it here for obvious reasons. As for the Casselberry store it was closed but with the intention of moving it into a new location in the greater Orlando area. We opened a store in Altamonte Springs which was about 15 minutes form the old Casselberry store. It is located on SR436 on the opposite side of I-4 that our Casselberry store was.

They were just to close to keep both of them open so we decided on the Altamonte Springs store due to its central location and in the future will reopen a store closer to some of the new growth further out to service our customer's out around the B Line. Come visit us in Altamonte Springs, we get our customers coming in all the time that shopped with us in Casselberry.

Again I will privately pass your email on to Marshal. Have a wonderful week!

After finishing the aspen bed we purchased, we realized that it did not come with hardware for assembly. When picking up the bed, we also got a box with center supports, but there is nothing to attach the headboard and footboard to the rails. Was that something that should have come with the bed or is it something we need to purchase separately? Thank you in advance for the clarification.
As an additional comment, we are quite happy with our experience at the Cutler Bay Wood You and the quality of our furniture.

Response to Jessica:

Jessica,

Thank you for your kind reference of the Wood You Cutler bay store, it never gets old hearing it! As for your bed I am going ot have to ask you to contact that store for further clarification. There are many ways to buy a footboard and headboard and without knowing the specifics of the item it is all but impossible to give you an educated answer.

However, i think you will find the staff to be ready and willing to assist you in any manner neccessary to recify the situation! Have a wonderful Sunday, sorry I could not be more specific.

Response to Lisa

Lisa,

First off thank you for your years of loyalty. The largest maufacturer of aspen products is a company named Khoury. Check with your local Wood You Furniture store and see if they carry that line. If they do they will have an instore catalog with all the available products from them, with in reason.

I say that because manufacturers do add and drop products frequently and at times it can be a chore in and of itself to keep up with the flow of that manufacturer. With that being said the majority of the Khoury line is on this website and there will be in store catalogs to view the products available as well.

If you just can not seem to get anywhere please email me at bbwoodyou@bellsouth.net and I will do all I can to assist. Sorry it took a few days to get your post up we had a glitch in our blog on the administration side.

Have a wonderful week!

Dear Mr.Blankenship,

I have been in the store in Ocala, Fl. and they no longer carry the Aspen set. I need at least one more piece to finish my guest room set. K004100U the Aspen Bi-Level or the Aspen Highboy K000600U. When I looked on your new site (which is very nice) Thank you, they did not show up as a dealer ? I was told at the store that their sister store in Gainesville,Fl. could still order this but only when a full truck would be coming from up North, Mi. Is there any other store in the region/central Fl. that I could just go into and pick it up.

Thank you for the great new site and the attention to your business. That seems to be a lost art in this day and age.
Sincerely,

Stephanie G.

Stephanie,
Thank you so much for contacting us. Also your kind words about our new site, which we love too, really get me excited. I love when there are those out there that recognize the efforts we put forth to earn your business. You are important to us!!

Yes we can get you the Aspen pieces you speak of. I have already notified our Manager at our Altamonte Springs store, Rob Lebu and he is expecting an email from you. Or if you prefer you can call him at the store. The number to the store can be found by selecting "Store Locator" at the top menu bar and in there you will find the number to the store. Either way contact him and give him the stock numbers you gave me and let us start the process and get you what you want. Thank you for the opportunity to earn your business and you taking the time to contact us.

I have been a previous customer of Wood You for many years (15+) now. Having many of your pieces already in my home, I am looking to add to them. Since the stores carry different products than those shown on the website, I was wondering if the website truly contained every item available for purchase or if there would be a catalog in store that would have more selections. I am in need of 2 bedside/accent tables in the aspen wood but finding it difficult to locate the aspen pieces at my nearest store. I have no problem driving to another location but want to be certain they have the pieces I want. Will you please advise if there is an in-store catalog where I may search for the pieces I want. Or, is what shown on the website all that is offered at all Wood You stores? Please reply ASAP as I am hoping to make a purchase very, very soon.

Thank you!

My wife and I spent sometime on your website prior to going to your store. We had a good idea of the items we were interested in (which i later found out was Khoury) and were very disappointed to find out that our local store does not carry what we wanted.

They knew the items we apoke of but did not even offer to bring them in for us. Also their attitude towards us seemed a bit short. Why show something on your site that is not available at your stores? You lost a sale from us.

---------------------------------------
---------------------------------------

Response to Steven:

Steven,

Sorry to hear about your experience with your local store. Each store owner chooses what they wish to carry and there are a few who no longer carry the Khoury line. It is available in the majority of our stores and has been a great product for us for over 20 years. Since the majority of Wood You stores carry the line we display it on the main site to best service our customer.

If you email me at bbwoodyou@bellsouth.net and let me know what items you were interested in I will see what I can do to help you get them. Thank you for the opportunity to earn your business. I apologize for the way you perceived your visit, lets see if we can turn that around by getting you what you want.

My family enjoys our local Wood you store. I came on the site to look for some items and was surprised to see such a nice site, well done.

Since I was here I thought I would take the time to let you know how much we enjoy shopping at the Wood You in Brandon (for years!) My house is full of your furniture and I see no reason to change that pattern :)

Thank you for continuing to offer great furniture at fair pricing.

We have the mission dining room table and chairs. A white wash finish was applied to it. It has been in storage for about 4 years. Now we notice that areas of the wood have darkened where the white wash finish was not applied. I'm wondering how we can "touch up" those areas without refinishing the entire set. Can we sand those areas and apply a white wash finish to just those areas? Will it blend in? What product should we use? Also, the top has some damage from moving and will need to be sanded down. Do we need to completely sand it down? Can you advise what product to use to seal the finish and give it the shine? Thanks very much.

Hi. The local Wood You near me is a really neat store for my family to shop. They seem to always have something new in there when I stop by. My sister and I are addicted to your store.

I think every room in my house has at least one item from Wood you, most have more :) I came by Saturday and you could tell I was not the only one who likes what you do, it was packed! Good companies always do well. Thanks for the opportunity to say thanks you guys deserve it . . . I'm hooked!

I just came on your site to look at a few items with my wife. I have not been on in sometime and was pleasently surprised at your site and now a blog. Really looks nice!

I shop at the Clearwater Wood You and have always been treated very nicely. My wife is over my shoulder saying she always feels comfortable shopping there and gains good information from your staff everytime she visits.

You have some good employee's who care about us, that makes it easier to buy from Wood You Furniture. Good real wood products, nice store and good employees! I rate your company as a whole and my local Wood You very highly, keep up the good work!

Don't you think it would help to actually list your location (s) , Hours, Etc?

=====================================
Ms Carollee,
This site is not dedicated to all the individual Wood You stores around the country. At one time it was the corporate website but it now serves as the Jacksonville stores page. There is no corporate part of Wood You anymore, just individual stores that each have their own sites . . . You can google the town you are in for the Wood You nearest to you. In the near future this site will take on a different look for all those outside our immediate driving area.

Thank you for your input,

As I have kept an eye on the previous poll, the number one reason our customers did not purchase from Wood You was for a fear of staining their items. This is totally understandable, as I myself was skeptical about the first item I ever stained. The No Fault Finish Guarantee that Rob in Florida explained is accentually free insurance on your results. The products we now carry are so user friendly, it allows us, with confidence, to offer you this guarantee.
Also, for our customers who just don't have the space or time to stain their item(s), several of our locations, including mine, now offer "Custom Finishing" in numerous paint & stain colors. So, fear no more! Let us show you just how easy the staining process really is, or let us have it custom finished for you. Thank you for your votes. This will only help us serve you as customers better & better.

You have some serious errors on the website. When you drill down, e.g. from bedroom to armoire to a particular item, you end up with a blank page, i.e. no item. The error message is below. I'm using IE 8.0.

Also, I was still hoping to see the interior of the armoires or at least a brief description. I found only one that said 'a bar and two shelves'. Even at the local store, the catalogs provide no better information. Very disappointing.

During the week before the 4th of July Holiday I decided to go shopping for a few new pieces of furniture for my son's bedroom. When I entered the parking lot, the 'Yes we are Open' was up. I retrieved two young children from my vehicle and walked to the door. The door was locked and signs were posted about your upcoming sale. I was pissed. I had to put two kids back into car seats. When I returned to the store a week later, the men in the store told me that it was intentional. If the closed sign was posted, I still would have gotten out of the vehicle to read the sign to determine when the store would have re-opened. But the children would have stayed in the car seat. Orange Park, Florida

Response to Stephanie:

Stephanie,

I want to apologize for the way in which you were put out by our store closing for the week. I too have small children and know the time it takes to get them in amd out of the car. The open signs were used in the past intentionally, I have never been a fan of that mentality. They were not instructed to do that this vacation but where I failed was being specific with NOT to do that, so those that have been with the company for years just followed prior protocol. Ultimately it is my fault and I thank you for taking the time to express your frustration here. In the future I will be more specific with my employees and I think you will find this does not reoccur.

Have a wonderful week and take good care of those youngins :)

I purchased a bedroom set from here a while ago and because my husband is in the military we move ALOT, well recently a Drw of one of the dresser was broken beyond repair. I visited the valrico store and discused with the sales rep about purchasing a new one. He stated that it would have to be ordered and would take at least a few weeks to come in..... It has sence been almost 5 MONTHS! I have been very patient and called monthly to check on the order..... I love my bedroom set but it just isnt nice missing a piece! My patience has worn off!

----------------------------------------
----------------------------------------

Response to Carrisa,

I spoke with the Manager of the Valrico store and he has ordered the drawer you need, actually twice. However, he has not followed through by getting me involved since the drawer has not come in. I first off would like to apologize to you, we have dropped the ball on you!

Tomorrow morning I am going to run down the order and then make sure it is replaced. I will also monitor it until it is in the store ready for you to pick up. Five months is just way to long for a customer to wait . . . period! Please take down my personal email and feel free to stay in contact with me if you feel it neccessary. However, I think you will find Rob over at our Valrico store to be on his toes concerning your situation. We did not follow up with you and now we need to hustle to earn back your trust. thank you for taking the time to touching base with us here.

It still might take me a bit of time to get the drawer in but I will get the drawer to you via Valrico and Mr. Rob. Please accept my deepest apologies for our mishandling of this issue, you will find the ball will not be dropped again!

my email is bbwoodyou@bellsouth.net

How about adding a customer's gallery section. People could post pictures of their Wood You furniture in their home settings. It could give others finishing and decorating ideas.

Response to Billy:

Billy,
Great idea! I will look into putting a page like that up. Thanks for the great idea!

I regularly shop at the store in Brandon Florida (suburb of Tampa) and have bought a few pieces from there. The store is wonderful and the sales people are very friendly and never pushy.
The last piece I bought has been in the garage waiting to be finished but one thing led to another and a long time has passed before I could get to it. Of course I have lost the finishing instructions and my memory has become hazy on the finer details of what to do when as far as using 100 grit sand paper or 120 grit initially to prepare the wood for staining and when to use the fine sanding (pre or post first coat of varnish and/or inbetween coats).
I came to the site looking for those finishing instructions as well as perhaps some helpful tips to finish the piece and make it looks its best but was somewhat disappointed when I didn't see them here.
A friendly suggestion would be to add those instructions under the resources section for those who would like to reference them or need them for the first time if they lost the initial steps given by the sales people.... :)

Response to Craig:

Craig,
Great point be looking for our finishing instruction on the site in the near future. Thank you for the idea. However, You need them now . . . why not email me at bbwoodyou@bellsouth.net and if you have a fax machine we can fax it to you or if not I can email you our intructions. Thank you for your patronage at our Brandon store, we appreciate your business! As always please tell your friends and family about our real wood furniture.

I live outside of Anderson, SC and have always enjoyed visiting the Wood You here. The website represents the company well. some of the pictures need touching up but overall it is a nice website.

Response to Darlene:

Darlene,

That is good to hear. All of us in Wood You work hard to maintain a fun atmosphere in our stores. As for the pictures on the site I totally agree. We are in the process of cleaning them up and adding new ones from the manufacturers. I hope next time you come back to our site you will be able to see the difference. Thank you for taking the time to comment and especially to shop with us. The loyalty of our customers is so very much appreciated!

I've been looking at armoires. It sure would be helpful to have photos of the interior of armoires along with the exterior ones.

Response to Mr. Kahrs

Mr. Kahrs,

Thanks for taking the time to post your comments. I will have to look into that, unfortunately the manufacturers do not take those pictures so it would be something Wood You would need to do. I see where that would benefit you as a customer and will keep that in mind as we develop our new site.

I was saddened to see that the store in Casselberry closed down. I have found the Altamonte Springs store, which made my wife very happy . . . (edited) . . . I look forward to filling my new home with more of your products. Keep up the good work and thank you!!

Yea the Casselberry store was the first store in Orlando for us. It was tough closing that store. However, chin up, we did not intend to close it forever, just to reposition it for future growth. You will see another store come back in that market just closer to the newer growth. Thanks for looking around for the next closest store we work hard to make the drive worth it!

I have visited your website before and really like the changes. Some of the pictures are different sizes, I would change that :)

--------------------------------
--------------------------------

Response to Adrianne:

Adrianne,
Thank you for your view. We are still in the process of adjusting the sizes of the pictures. The ones you see that are larger are a test set to see what size works best.

For me the larger size fits the website better. So bear with us over the next couple of weeks and we will get all the sizes corrected and the site tightened up even more. Always appreciate your input!

I have items from your Melbourne store in almost every room in my house, and I really like the layout of new site. However, there seemed to be an issue navigating from one page to the next. In several furniture categories the site would skip pages and go directly to the last item page. Also, it would be great to have prices listed. Maybe listing them based on store location choice would help.

---------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------

RESPONSE TO AMY

First off thank you so much for your business and kind words about the layout of the new site. Wood You is really excited about the future of our company and believes that the internet will play a larger and larger roll in that. I have tried to recreate the issue you are speaking of but have been unable to do so. However, I will continue to monitor the site and see if I can recreate that issue, thanks for the heads up!

The question of pricing has always come up as we have grown from site to site and town to town. With stores overseas in Nassau,Bahamas, Trinidad and the Abaco Islands it really puts us at a disadvantage in this area. The way they must price things overseas is totally different than our American based stores. However, it is an issue I am working on but I don't believe I will have a good solution for a while. I know this does not fix your issue but hopefully it helps clarify why we refrain from pricing on the web.

Amy thank you for chiming in on our site. Keep coming back to the blog and touching base with us I enjoy conversing with our customers. Your insight is greatly appreciated!

Brett Blankenship

You web site lack a real contcat number, it seem like your hiding something.

I hope you post this message

------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------

RESPONSE TO DAVID:

David,

Not sure why you would think we would not post your comments, it is a legitimate question. If you have a question or concern go to the store locator page and select the store that is nearest to you. There you will find the local numbers to the store that can give you the focused attention you deserve. Wood You's goal, in our business, is to earn each and everyone of our customers and we feel putting you in touch with your neighborhood store accomplishes that the quickest.

However, our corporate number is (904) 354-0300. Feel free to call and leave me a message and I will get back with you in short order and assist you in any way I can! We appreciate your visit on to Wood You's website and always welcome your comments here. More importantly, thank you for taking the extra time to send in your comments, they are much appreciated as you are.

David have a great week!

Bill,
The links to some manufacturers available are on select individual stores sites. You can find them by selecting the store closest to you in the store locator menu button.

As for the main Wood You site we have never had a link page. Hope this helps and thank you for touching base with us.

I like the new site. But there used to be a link to all the different furniture manufacturers that supplied Wood You. I miss that. I liked being able to see all the different products available from each manufacturer. Can you add that back?
